Footstep noise from the flat or room above
Footsteps, chair legs and dropped objects from the room or flat above are impact noise, and no amount of insulation stuffed into the ceiling void will stop it on its own. The structure itself has to be broken up.
We deal with it from whichever side we can reach. From below, that means an independent or resiliently-bar-mounted ceiling with dense mineral wool in the void and layered acoustic plasterboard, hung on isolators so vibration cannot pass into the joists. From above, an acoustic mat such as Tecsound under the floor finish stops the impact at source and is usually the cheaper route where the floor is coming up anyway.
Ceiling height is the usual constraint, so at survey we measure what you can afford to lose and design to it. Where a flat is above, we also check the flanking paths at the walls — treating the ceiling alone rarely works if sound is bypassing it through the perimeter.
