Mould, cold bridges & asbestos encapsulation
Condensation & Asbestos Control, Basingstoke
Black mould on a window reveal or in the corner of a bedroom is a physics problem, not a cleaning problem. Warm, moist air is meeting a cold surface. Wipe it away and it comes back — remove the cold surface and it does not.
How we approach it
We survey to find where the cold surfaces and cold bridges actually are: uninsulated reveals and lintels, thin extension walls, a floor over an open void, a loft hatch, a solid chimney breast. Then we design those surfaces out with the right insulation build-up and advise on the ventilation needed so moisture leaves the building instead of settling on the walls.
On older commercial, industrial and agricultural buildings the roof sheeting is often asbestos cement. Removal is hazardous and expensive. Approved encapsulation is usually the better route: the underside is sprayed with polyurethane that cures in about 60 seconds into a solid but pliable barrier, sealing the fibres in place, halting further degradation, killing condensation and adding insulation at the same time.
