Usable storage without crushing the insulation
Almost every loft we board has the same problem underneath it: boards screwed straight onto the joists, squashing the insulation flat and destroying most of its value. Done properly, you get the storage and keep the performance.
Current insulation depth is deeper than a standard joist, so a board laid directly on the joists compresses the wool and creates a cold slab over the middle of your ceiling. The fix is a raised platform — stilts or a battened sub-frame lifting the floor clear so the full depth of insulation stays uncompressed and ventilated underneath. It costs a little more than screwing boards down and it is the difference between storage and a heat leak.
We top the insulation up to current depth first where it is short, then board the area you actually need rather than the whole loft, and we can fit a larger insulated hatch, a fixed ladder and lighting at the same time. The hatch is worth doing: an uninsulated loft hatch undoes a surprising amount of a good insulation job.
