Cold suspended floors, garages & draughty ground floors
A cold floor makes a whole room feel cold no matter how high the heating goes, and in older Hampshire houses with suspended timber floors the draught coming up through the boards is doing most of the damage.
Where there is a ventilated void below, we insulate between the joists — from underneath if there is a cellar or crawl space, or by lifting boards where there is not — with the insulation supported properly and the perimeter sealed so cold air cannot flow past it. The airbricks stay clear: the void has to keep breathing, and blocking it is how people turn a cold floor into a rotten one.
Rooms built over a garage or car port are the other common job, and there the ceiling below is usually the easiest and cheapest surface to treat. Solid ground floors can be insulated above the slab where floor height allows. Whichever it is, we also seal the junction where the floor meets the external wall — that perimeter cold bridge is where mould appears first.
